about

Chime (for Wu) is a stereo sound collage composed of audio recordings made in collaboration by Mitchell Keaney and Xinan Helen Ran. Both artists working remotely in Berlin and Suzhou respectively shared a sonic affinity with the sound of resonating objects while working on this piece.

Since the pandemic lockdown, Helen had been dreaming of making wind chimes in her backyard in New York— a way to sonically connect with neighbors all around who were all stuck at home. This plan was finally realized when Helen returned back to China later that year, when she collaborated with her father to make these chimes out of recycled copper water pipes.

Upon relocating to Berlin in October 2020, Mitchell has been obsessively making field recordings of the church bells which ring throughout the city each day at 12:00 and 18:00. Among other things, the sound of the bells signify the time of the day - an orientation that has become increasingly more difficult given the current global climate.

Gasps for air, field recordings made around Berlin, the hum of a refrigerator, and discarded musical improvisations make sonic cameos in Chime (for Wu) while an omnipresence of wind chimes, church bells, and other resonating objects act as the sonic glue holding the sound collage together.

It is suitable to listen to this piece in different environments— in the park, on a busy street or at the beach. We hope through this piece you get to experience and discover more from your everyday soundscape.

This work was first shown together with Helen's piece "Wu" in 2021 at Hengyi Gallery, Hangzhou, China.
